« American Idol - Season 9 | Main | 5 Favorite TV Shows of 2009 »

Best analysis of this whole "mess" I've read. And I think spot on about the future and present of TV. They may get lucky with 1 or 2 reality shows that cost them little to produce and attract a broad audience. But drama/niche/genre/comedy is still what network TV is all about. (Big Bang Theory is number one for comedy right now and NO-ONE at the network could have seen that coming.. sci-fi in-jokes and geeky internet culture references? I'm surprised it got a pilot!) Producing quality programming is expected now and they just cannot get away with shows that look "too TV" anymore. But ad dollars are just not as huge as they used to be. Quite a quandary!

Finding loyal fans for niche programming, fans that will buy the DVD set, action figures, t-shirts and novels? That's where the long-term money will be.
